We say in the S&C world that strength & conditioning is a journey for an athlete, one that can take years. In many cases as we now start working with more and more with kids, sports coaches, teachers, parents, underage clubs etc so the process is starting as young as 4 or 5. This is not about making athletes out of kids, the process adjusts through different sections of their lives based on deep research and applied practice to improve their movement and enjoyment of exercise. These are the first steps for being a healthy person in their later years. If we are to use the “Developmental Model” as presented through the “Athletic Skills Model” humans who are not fully grown would have already gone through that process. However, for the most part the regular clients Coaches like myself meet are adults. Very often they are coming from a moderately to extremely unhealthy lifestyle. In the majority of cases these people are leading excessively sedentary lifestyle. What an S&C Coach can do for someone is build a progressive layered program individualized to the person themselves. While the process, which we will talk about later in this series, will remain very similar for most people the pace of the program will depend on the person themselves and their ability to adjust their life to the program. How much time they can commit, how bothered they are about how quick the changes are and so on. However, it is a process and that process should involve intelligent programming, evidence based education of the client so they can continue to evolve into eventually a completely self reliant person in terms of health and fitness. We all fail at things, but alot of people fail and learn. The rest fail and either give up or go somewhere else looking for answers. The thing is you have the answers already. You just may not be ready to admit them or commit. And thats fine, but the people who do succeed, commit. But not only do they commit to turning up, they commit to learning and getting consistent. Consistency is key to all progress, especially long term progress. Like any Coach or Trainer or indeed someone involved in helping people psychologically there is generally 3 groups people fall into in terms of success. Here is a little breakdown of what my stats and subjective look back on the past 3 years show: Very often the people in group 1 are actually “busier” than those in the other 2 groups. However, they are organised and always ready for challenges. Luckily, you can move from one group to the next. The rest of the series will cover
